Accent lighting is defined by what it does not light
Most outdoor lighting answers the question of how to light a property. Accent lighting starts somewhere else. It is not coverage. Point it at a specimen tree, a stone column, a water feature, a front door and leave the rest alone. The dark part is not an oversight. It is what makes the lit part read.The concept is simple to say and hard to hold to. Pick what matters and resist adding to it. The pull is always to light one more thing, and holding it is the entire skill.
Good candidates
Not everything is improved by a fixture pointed at it. Anything with texture picks up light and shows it off, because light raking across a rough surface creates shadow and shadow creates interest. Flat painted siding mostly just gets brighter. Form is the second test.
The most common mistake
Plans go wrong when the list grows. The homeowner likes the first uplit tree and asks for a second, then the whole bed, then the driveway. At some point the property is evenly lit, and the accents stop being accents. A disciplined plan says no more than it says yes.A good accent plan looks thin written down and right in person, which is an awkward thing to sell and an easy thing to live with.

One more thing about brightness
Accent fixtures are usually dimmer than people expect. Your eyes adjust to darkness, so a modest amount of light on a dark property does a great deal. You are highlighting something, not trying to read a book by it.
Two directions, two moods

Landscape accents point at plants, and plants move. Growth blocks the throw, and mulch, mowing and weather move ground mounted units. Nothing is broken. The aim just needs a look. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.The test is unchanged: go outside at night and look at it. If a fixture has drifted off the subject, it takes a moment to correct.
