Look at any house after dark and the outline you pick out first is the roof edge. It is the longest continuous line on the building, and it has open sky behind it, which is why light on it reads from a distance. Put light on it and the house has an edge again, which is the effect people are actually after.That is the reason the roofline gets the hardware, and the reason a single run there does more than fixtures scattered around the yard. It is the most efficient piece of exterior lighting a house can have, for what it costs to install.
What roofline lighting actually consists of
The system is a slim aluminum track, color matched to the trim, with the LEDs running inside it. The channel does two jobs at once: it holds the lights and it hides them. Matched to the trim, it looks like trim from the sidewalk.

Daylight is the other half of the design
A roofline system is on the house every day, lit or unlit. Matching the channel to your trim color is not a cosmetic afterthought, it is the thing that keeps the house looking like a house in July. Mount it tight to the edge, match the color, and route the wire out of sight, and nothing about the daylight view changes.
What you do with it once it is up
Once the run is in, the rest is what you set it to. Plain white most nights, holiday color when the calendar calls for it, and a schedule that runs it without you. The setting that gets the most hours is the warm white, which is not what most buyers expect going in.
What drives the size of the job
Rooflines do not scale with house size. Length matters less than people assume. Every direction change is another cut, another fitting and another decision. Two stories is a different day than one.
Where it fastens
Homeowners expect it to hang off the gutter, since that is how the temporary version goes up. A permanent channel does not work that way. That distinction matters since a gutter is not a permanent mounting point, and anything fastened to one inherits its problems.
